In July of 2017, thirty-four singers from the South Bay Children’s Choir traveled to England for the fourth time to participate in the International Children’s Choir Festival in Canterbury and London. Our singers had the opportunity to perform with four other American choirs in the Canterbury Cathedral and the Southwark Cathedral, both wonderful venues with incredible acoustics. All the choirs in the Festival also sang together for an Evensong service in the Canterbury Cathedral, and our choir was invited to sing a solo concert at noon in the Cathedral as well.
SBCC had numerous chances to work with internationally recognized choral conductors Henry Leck and Dr. David Flood, which was an incredible experience for them. Our singers put much effort into perfecting their music before going to the Festival, but their singing was even more glorious after spending the week in England performing and learning from guest conductors as well as their peers. It was an honor for us to be invited to participate, and our members grew musically as well as personally from the experience.
SBCC plans summer tours about every three years, sometimes international and sometimes within the United States. We will likely schedule another tour for Bel Canto and Concert Choir in July 2020.
